Content Note: Film contains graphic animal cruelty and many, many rounds of cockfighting.

Cockfighting competitor Warren Oates takes a vow of silence until he wins the gold medal and his finance's heart. Super-rare movie Cockfighter (1974) has real-life cockfighting, not Mondo Cane-style stock footage, but actual scenes with the actors involved. In 1974, the sport was still legal, with its own engraved gold medal. Warren Oates sheds his girlfriend, family, RV, and house to become the cockfighter. His character's a nihilist. If you can put up with 90 minutes of cockfighting, it's worth it to hear what his finance has to say at the end. Or you can skip to the end, this is YouTube.
